Ok, so people have been asking me what’s going on with me… To sum it up, I have been really ill and dealing with some family stuff.

First, physically ill by getting strep/bronchitis/laryngitis and then what seems like a never-ending cold. Secondly, my mental state hasn’t been the best since moving to Red Deer. Honestly, it hasn’t been that great since I had surgery.

It’s hard to explain but I have a hard time “seeing” myself for who I am now, and while at times I get that I’m not the person I used to be (physically, emotionally, mentally, etc.) it’s hard to wrap my head around it. Sometimes this has been because of things people have said that came across as insensitive and while that may not be their intention, it is almost one of those “take a breath and think about what you say before you say it.” I understand that some people are surprised when they haven’t seen me in months or years but even then, I don’t see the changes as a bad thing. I will point out that based on what some people have said, I was a really awful person to a lot of people. If that’s the case and you are one of those people, I’m sorry!

Then, I moved to Red Deer and while I have tried to get to know people, I don’t always feel like I “fit in.” I’m a lot older than many of my classmates and while I don’t always notice the age difference, I don’t really get invited out or asked to hang out because they have their friendship groups already established. It’s something I have accepted. I have also noticed something about my basic personality lately… I HATE groups! I don’t mind being in a group to do schoolwork as long as we have a common goal and something we’re working towards. When it comes down to being in a large crowd of people or a crowded room, I HATE it. I almost feel more lonely/alone with a large group around me. One such example of this was going to the Sean Kingston concert at the beginning of October. I went alone. I’d gone to concerts, movies, etc. alone before so I didn’t figure that it would be a big deal. The crowd was SO overwhelming that I had a panic attack and left.

I’ve figured out part of the reason: I don’t fit into a “clique” and I don’t attempt to either. I don’t try to fit into one particular group of people, I am friends with multiple people in multiple groups. But when they split into their smaller groups, I tend to get lost in the shuffle. A good example of this recently was going to the bar with some friends on Halloween. I don’t remember a time I felt more lonely… in a group setting. Or at a Scout Canada camp. I didn’t know 2/3 of the people there but the ones I did know I feel like I’m friends with. And again, when they split into their smaller groups, I was the outsider. I’m not 100% sure why/how this happens but it does… and honestly, it’s kind of upsetting. I’ve been feeling this way for a while and I watch other people who seem to fit in seamlessly and it’s as though they have been part of whatever is going on forever but I’m not one of those people.

Family stuff… Sit down, buckle up, hold on… Mom says if we applied to be a reality show we’d be rejected based on believability. I don’t disagree. In the past couple of years, as most people know, my dad has been in and out of hospital. Most recently, in May 2009 he hadn’t been seen or heard from in a couple of weeks so one of the neighbours called the police and they kicked in the front door at my parent’s house (for anyone who hasn’t been paying attention, this is AGAIN) and he was taken to the Peter Lougheed Hospital. Mom was going over everyday to see him, I was going a few times a week, as was John and Ryan and I would go whenever we were in Calgary on the weekend after I moved. Dad has been in the PLC since May. Well, until midweek last week. October 27, when the hospital called Mom to tell her they were planning to transfer Dad to Ponoka she figured within a couple of weeks. There had been an issue with another patient assaulting Dad the Saturday before this so we knew something was going to happen but not quite that fast. So, as of October 28, Dad is living in the Centennial Centre in Ponoka. (No, I don’t have a forwarding address and if you want to contact him, I suggest you mail it to his home address and it will get forwarded.) This has been incredibly hard on Mom and honestly doesn’t make me rest very easily because he is so close to where I am. He has his ID, money, credit cards… I’m not sure what to say/think. Needless to say, the entire situation isn’t helping my current mental state.

So, if you add together the family stuff, the physical health stuff, no social life, a bf who lives in a different city and I rarely see, the fact my student loan still hasn’t been processed and school…. I feel a little like I’m going nuts. And it’s NOT a good feeling! I know a lot of people who deal with a LOT more all at once generally speaking but there is at least a minor amount of stability in their lives which I’m sure helps… I also know that a lot of people deal with “family issues” on a daily basis and I’m sure mine aren’t as bad or whatever… I’m not saying they are and I don’t want to compete. I just wanted to write things out so that the people who have been asking what is going on can read and find out and I don’t have to explain things over and over and over…

On that note, I have two midterms and a playing test tomorrow plus three assignments and a paper so I’m going back to work and then maybe getting some sleep…

Labs and Assignments and Projects, Oh my!

I started to write about this week and then stopped, deleted it all and decided to start again... All in all, school is ok. I’m not completely feeling like I’m drowning but I have a few papers, assignments, etc. coming up rather quickly and it’s starting to really stress me out.

Specifically, I need to chose a topic for my pre-confederate Canadian history class and I need to pick a composer for a music paper. Now, for those of you who know me, a paper like the second one should be easy peasy. However, the composers that come to mind first are people I have written quite extensively about previously. This paper is only 1200 words or something but I almost feel like it’s cheating to write about any of those people again. Thoughts? And does anyone have any suggestions for the history paper? I can write about pretty much anything. In all honesty, it’s actually more of a project than a “paper”... :)

Anyway, Wednesday I attended the EUS AGM and was elected as the Secretary for the 2009/2010 year. :) I’m stoked! This weekend I’m going to Edmonton for an ATA conference aimed specifically at the student locals. We’re staying at the Executive Royal Inn and I might stay through until Sunday so Ryan and I can go to the World Waterpark. :) At the hotel they have $20 passes to West Ed which is a great deal! The people I’m going to get to work with seem like a lot of fun and it’s going to be great to get to know some people around the College. I’m missing being social like I was at home...

Tonight after choir I practiced for my piano lab (which I still feel like I suck at btw) and worked a couple of the pieces we’re being tested on next week. Then, I went to see High School Musical! It was ok... I guess because I’m not in the 12 and under age grouping it probably wasn’t aimed at me. ;) I am supposed to write two concert reviews this semester and I might use it for one but I’m still not sure. I think of a musical as having a plot or story line and this one was cute with the HSM songs and everything but in the long run it had no story line; it was a celebration of summer but there wasn’t really anything that tied everything together other than, “woot! It’s summertime!” :P I’m still debating what other concerts I want to go to but I’m trying to mix it up quite a bit more than I might have previously.

After class tomorrow I’m going to run a few errands and then drive to Edmonton. I’m hoping to see Ryan for a little while before I have to go check in at the conference and he has to be at work... We’ll see how it all pans out.

Weddings are always beautiful....

YAY!!! Weekend!!!

To recap the end of my week...

Thursday was ok... I hate history but the professor is entertaining and honestly, he talks a lot and I tend to write things like this while I’m listening... for anyone who is going to freak about that (Mom, Tanya, Auntie Muriel...) my brain retains more information if I’m multi-tasking or I will zone out and not remember anything. We’ve already talked about the first nations and we’ve just finished that. We had a library orientation today... Boring! And we’re talking about the European settlers on Tuesday.

Choir was tougher than I was expecting. She said she would push me but I didn’t realize just how much. So, as per what I wrote before, she moved me to another part of the section and I’m singing the middle part in the three part divisi. What I didn’t realize is that the pieces I’d already learned have a three part divisi as a second soprano part and guess what.... that’s me! So, I went from not needing the music to basically sight reading the pieces. There are sections where I jump back and forth between alto and second soprano as well. All in all, I know that learning the pieces will be ok but the jumping between parts kind of makes my head hurt to be honest. :) I also asked to make sure but in the four part divisi I sing first alto but in the three I technically sing second soprano. It’s going to be fun!!!

Friday was good and bad. My music class had a library orientation and tour today. Boring and a repetition of Thursday... Dance was fun! There were 8 of us and the professor so it was a ton of fun! We got to dance with everyone and learned some rumba which was cool. We worked a lot on the foxtrot and did the line dances again. Thankfully, no “La Raspa” today! :) In Math, I FINALLY understood something!!! I still don’t understand the union, whatever bar, intersect stuff but I’m trying. Today we started number sets. So, as it turns out, I can do those! We were doing things like (this is my own example) 123 base 5 + 456 base 5 = 1134 base 5 (yes, I did the math to figure out what that would be). He used base 10 to begin with and explained that it’s like using the 10x10 blocks, the 10’s and 1’s as well. I remember doing that and have done it with mom’s classes so putting it into that context made more sense to me! (I will say, HOLY CRAP, I can’t believe I understand something!)

Friday night I spent some time with Ryan, did coffee with Matt and then ended up in Edmonton. We had breakfast at the Flying J in Sherwood Park and then went to Ryan’s and slept for a few hours. We got stuck in traffic on our way to Calgary and sadly missed the wedding ceremony. :( We checked into the hotel, went to buy Ryan a belt and then grabbed something to eat. We went to the reception and it was good to see some people I haven’t seen in a while. It was nice to see Adrienne’s parents and to meet Joshua while he was awake (I’ve only ever been around when he’s asleep or at daycare or with Adrienne’s parents and we’re out somewhere). Adrienne looked beautiful and the bridesmaid dresses were gorgeous! At the reception, I realized just how self-conscious I am. Specifically about what/how much I eat. I was drinking orange juice with a bit of grenadine (no alcohol) and got some weird looks about that. Oh! And, Adrienne said she didn’t recognize me at first but realized she’s seen pictures of Ryan so realized who I was based on him. (I thought that was cute.) Dinner was pre-plated so I shared with Ryan and ate what I could. I tried the salad, had a piece of meat, some mashed potatoes, some veggies (beans and such) and a couple of bites of cheesecake. I liked that it was spaced out so I had time to digest and could try a bit more than usual. After the open mic (which I didn’t get up for, I would have cried and Adrienne would have cried and I didn’t want that) and toasts, the dance started. During the first dance, Joshua wanted to be included which was really cute. :) I danced a few fast songs with the girls and then Ryan and I danced to a couple of songs. I LOVE to dance and he’s so strong that when we dance and he spins me, I almost fly. I’ve gotten to the point that I just pivot on one foot when he spins me! Afterwards I laugh and laugh and he thinks it’s funny because I’m all dizzy and I cling to him. Lol, it’s fun and I’ve never felt like being goofy is ok before but with Ryan I feel like it’s a good thing and that we have a ton of fun. Honestly, we have fun no matter what we do together. :) Afterwards we were staying at the Quality Inn so we stopped in at the Q and had a couple of drinks and then went and slept like we were dead... We were so tired we slept until noon on Sunday. :) I had a Math assignment to do so we went and hung out at the lounge with Micah and I did my assignment. I don't feel like I'm EVER going to understand Venn diagrams! :P

This week is looking like it’s going to be a long one. But I’m looking forward to it anyway!

Care Packages and BB Pin....

So, I have been asked by a couple of people about care packages... Like, would I receive them ok and what do/can I eat, etc. So... Care packages are cool. I miss home, I miss seeing Ryan as much as I used to and any reminders of my friends are great. By this, I mean pictures of people and stuff like that. My walls are still pretty bare but I have a few frames so pictures are great!

Otherwise, here's what I can't eat... It's a shorter list generally speaking...
- Anything with white flour or a white bread base and no white rice (I can have things that are rice based and whole grain or whole wheat otherwise).
- Anything with more than 8g of sugar per serving.
- Anything with caffeine. (I drink the occasional Iced Tea but it's such a small serving it doesn't seem to matter.)
- Anything with carbonation.
- Fresh veggies.
I'm at the point I can eat most things. And to put things into perspective, a package of Uncle Ben's long grain rice entree stuff is approximately 4 meals for me. An order of whole wheat pasta from Boston Pizza is approximately 6 servings. And no, I'm not kidding.

I want to have some kind of get together in Red Deer soon-ish on a weekend so anyone who can come; I'd love to see you!

My address here is:
45 Lister Cres.
Red Deer, AB T4R 2S6

Also, the easiest way to reach me (because of school and life) is via texting or BB messenger. So, for those of you with a BB, my pin is 31F49C5D or my phone number is on my profile. :)

Anyway, I'm going to nap for a bit and then hopefully go see Ryan!

I Hate Stupid People!

Ok, so, I feel like I might be doing a lot of these updates. But it’s all good because it makes me feel more settled to write about stuff. (I may not always publish these... some might be just for me.)

Choir was awesome on Tuesday. We worked on a couple of pieces... I had spent time learning my parts in the afternoon so I was able to sing “Loch Lomond” pretty much without music and most of “In Remembrance”. :) We looked at a new piece but didn’t do anything more than speak the rhythms. The composer of the piece is Brent Pierce which makes me wonder if it’s the B.P. I know or if there is more than one composer with that name...? The director let the soprano and alto sections go a few minutes early... As we were leaving she assigned us a section we haven’t done yet to learn by today. I was almost out of the door when she was breaking down the three female parts (I was under the impression I’m singing alto, specifically second, so I wasn’t really paying attention) and she listed who was singing the middle part and when she said, “Erin,” I looked around and was wondering who the other Erin is... She looked directly at me and said, “oh! I forgot... I’m moving you!” So... I went from sitting 14th in a section of 14 females to sitting approximately 7th. I’m not complaining! :D

Tuesday night, I went to karaoke at the college pub. O. M. G. So, I ended up sitting by myself (which I was ok with) and these two (maybe) 18 year old girls who were in little plaid skirts, stupid high heels (which neither could walk in) and wearing WAY too much make-up asked if they could sit with me. I said yes but spent most of the time BB messaging Tanya. :) I only did one song... The Queen’s rookie soccer squad was there and almost all of them were singing. I decided not to stay for a second song when a few things happened:
1. The “rotation” started to get longer and longer and longer but there were people who were singing twice or three times. *argh*
2. There was a TON of dead air space while the host debated with the person whose friends had written them down for a song without them knowing and didn’t want to sing alone or didn’t like that song, etc., etc., etc. *rolling eyes*
3. When I went to find out where I was in the rotation, they couldn’t find me... Oh wait! Because they had piled the slips into one large pile and then when they separated them back out, mine were under someone else’s. *ugh!*
AND....
4. When they DID find me and I was told where I was in the rotation, somehow I was further down the rotation than I had been the first time and there were technically LESS singers ahead of me. *WTF???*
I got there around 9:15, they started around 9:30 and when I left at 11:30 they were just starting the second rotation... In case no one got this; I miss Glenn, Todd and Kat! I’m going to try to find somewhere else to go in town... Otherwise, I may be road-tripping to Calgary midweek sometime to sing! Anyway, I was really annoyed so I went home, played Farm Town and Restaurant City for a while and then went to see Ryan.

Wednesday started ok... Piano lab was fun, we worked on “too” in lecture (it’s a music thing, it’s a way of saying half notes...) and played our recorders... We now know BAG and... E! :) All of those years of clarinet finger positions have got to be good for something! :D Dance class was awesome and I’m debating taking either a Jazz or Hip-Hop class (I don’t think I’m quite “street” enough for the second) outside of school. However, if I take them through campus recreation they are $30 for the semester as opposed to more expensive through a dance studio. Now, this is where my day fell apart...

Between my dance and math classes, I ran into the Student Finance office to find out the status of my student loan. It was rejected (I don’t want to go into it right now but the short version is that I’m working on appealing it... it has to do with the after effects of my surgery and finances afterwards...) and when I asked for clarification, I was given a copy of a letter that has been mailed to me in Calgary as of Sept. 10 but I have yet to see it. Anyway, I ran to get to math but by the time I got there I was upset about the loan stuff and out of breath from running. I stopped outside the classroom and tried to breathe and proceeded to hyperventilate so I ended up going outside and sitting on the grass and had a mini-meltdown. I called my mom and she talked me out of moving home and saying “eff it!” to school. I didn’t move to Red Deer for no reason! If I didn’t want to be in school, I wouldn’t have moved and I wouldn’t be going to class every freaking day! The reason I mention this is after I tried to call Alberta Learning and couldn’t reach anyone and then Alberta Student Finance and they were closed for lunch I went back to the Student Finance office and ended up talking to a woman that told me that maybe I should rethink whether or not this is financially feasible and whether or not I REALLY need to be here. She then told me that it is possible to make payment arrangements and gave me the name and office number of the lady I needed to talk to. She then told me to “really consider if you should be here before you go sign your life away!” I was LIVID. I immediately went up to Finance to talk to the lady I was supposed to and she wasn’t there. I was in tears and pissed off to the point I was pretty much speechless. I said I’d sit and wait and I did. She got back early and I explained a bunch of things, we called mom, I “signed my life away” and as such, I’m still enrolled and I’m staying. So, “pfft :P” to that dummy in Student Finance!

On a side note, Happy Birthday to all of my friend who have birthday's this week... I probably won't get a chance to comment on all of your FB pages or MSN's...

This weekend Adrienne and Sean are getting married... I’m really looking forward to seeing her, spending time with Ryan, seeing some of my friends and just relaxing! :)

Another update... More info this time...

So, over the weekend I baked cookies. Now, for anyone (like my mother) who is going to freak out about the fact that I’m not supposed to eat cookies; you’re right. I had 2 out of the 2 dozen or so that I made. What can I say... I’m a hardcore junk food junkie. For those people who don’t know me well, that was VERY sarcastic and I was rolling my eyes as I typed it. Anyway, I made enough cookies that Ryan and all of my roommates got to have some and I saved a dozen to take into school this morning to share with my music education class. I had a few leftover and (I was proud of myself for this) I shared them with the professor and a couple of the girls in my dance class as well as I took a couple to the Disability Services office. (Side note: I counted myself in the initial class but DID NOT eat any today!)

We started recorders in the music class yesterday so I’m sure I’m going to be driving my roommates, Ryan and my family nuts this semester when I’m practicing. ;) The recorder came with a cleaning rod, joint grease, a book, a play-along CD and a fingering chart! I’m lame but I think it’s GREAT! :)

My dance class is a lot of fun. We’ve done some mixer dances and line dances and started the foxtrot/two-step and the polka. Admittedly, after 20-25 minutes of polka-ing straight, my feet were sore! But, the fact we get to swap partners and meet a bunch of people is great! I know most of the people’s names in that class and it’s only the third day!

My math class isn’t so fun... I don’t like math to begin with and while we are only doing number sets and such, my understanding of what we were going to do and what we have been doing are two different things. I’m not sure how all of the “union” and “intersect” and “NOT” are going to work together but I’m working on differentiating between them... *sigh* I am SOOOO frustrated!!!

Anyway, in my history class we started talking about the First Nations and I’m finding it really interesting. I am still considering taking the First Nations course instead but I like the way he has this lecture structured and the project sounds interesting so I’m not sure I want to switch... I have a couple of days to decide.

Choir... Have I mentioned I LOVE to sing and have missed being in a choir??? I was considering joining a choir at home if I had time but when I got into RDC I figured I might as well take a choir and thus far, I LOVE IT! Granted, we’re doing some pieces I have done before (Loch Lomond and In Remembrance) but I’m looking forward to learning a new part. That’s the other thing... I’m singing alto and technically second alto, even though my range is technically higher but I offered to help fill in where needed. :) I’m looking forward to going back to sing later. The people (while young) seem nice and it’s nice to be in a musical environment.

Later tonight there is karaoke on campus. I’m thinking I might go sing... I just need something to do other than hanging out at home in my room. I have gotten a lot of studying done though, which is good. I’m just... Not feeling very social. I’m not feeling well and because of that, I don’t really want to have to be upbeat, positive and personable. Honestly, I’m slightly homesick, I’m stressed over financial stuff, school stuff and family stuff, I miss seeing Ryan, I miss having somewhere to go hang out and sing (a.k.a. The Q and Bootlegger’s) and I’m overwhelmed with school and living in Red Deer. The total of all of that is adding up to make me tired and just worn out in general. Also, I have yet to make many friends at school. Not intentionally... Just that most people are only in one of my classes and I don’t tend to run into them outside of class. I’m sure things will get better; it has only been a week...

All in all, I am happy with my decision to come here. I am debating getting involved in the MUS (Music Undergrad Society) or EUS (Education Undergrad Society) or both. I have applied for a few jobs and have had an interview but have yet to hear back about anything. I drove to Calgary Friday night this past weekend and helped out at the Q for a few hours. I was in the mood to drive and needed a break. It was good to see people and while I was wiped out on Saturday, it seemed worth it. Ryan came down from Edmonton on Saturday and we spent most of the day sleeping and I felt much better after that. He left yesterday after dropping me off at school and I went to see him when he was in town last night. Turns out that there might be a loophole in the “no passengers” rule that his company is “enforcing”... I’m waiting to hear what he finds out! :)

Anyone in the Red Deer area... I do want to go for coffee or whatever but I need a little longer to settle in and find my bearings. Please be patient with me...

First week done...

So, I made the mistake of signing up for 6 courses this semester. Two aren't full credit (one is 2, one is only 1.5) but the other 4 are a full 3 credits. So, I might decide before the add/drop deadline (this coming Thursday) that I'm going to get rid of one of them. I don't want to kill myself after all.

My living situation is... interesting. I have 4 housemates and they all seem nice, I haven't had a lot of time to hang out with them though.

Thus far, my favourite activity (not school related) was a drum circle on Thursday at lunch. It was relaxing getting to play and sit in the sun.

Now for school.... I love my music education methods class. I showed up for Choir and didn't know I was supposed to have auditioned so I ended up singing anyway and the director let me stay which made me less nervous. I am really enjoying my social dance class; I'm glad I decided to take that instead of tennis. Ed psych is interesting but the professor is deadly dull. (I think that might be the course I get rid of and I'll take it next semester instead.) My history class, (while a boring topic) seems like it's going to be a good course in general. The professor is a self-declared "nerd" and seems fairly dynamic! :) And... I HATE Math... But my higher arithmetic class seems like it will be interesting.

Anyway, I figured I'd write a little update because I've been getting a lot of questions...
